Navagio Beach Reopens To The Public For First Time Since Landslide

Zakynthos famous Navagio Beach reopened to the public on Saturday, after the landslide on September 13 this month, which left a few people injured.

Authorities have introduced new safety rules for tourist boats to ensure the safety of visitors to the popular cove, with its high cliffs and iconic shipwreck.

The beach had been closed since the cliff above the cove crumbled and fell into the water, overturning nearby boats and injuring some tourists.

Tourist craft have been allowed back since Saturday but are only permitted to lay anchor in waters right in front of the beached shipwreck and not at the edges of the beach.

Coast guard officers are also on hand, both on the beach and in a boat patrolling the waters, to ensure that safety precautions are observed.

According to Ekathimerini, a team of scientists from the University of Athens has recommended that Navagio beach be closed completely to the public.

Following a visit to the site last week, a team from the university’s Department of Geology suggested that more landslides can be expected in the area, which is accessible only by sea.
